Reading with Z: I did it!
As a picture book writer, lifelong reader, employee at a literacy nonprofit, and parent of a toddler, I spend a LOT of time thinking about children’s books. Welcome to my (and Z’s) semi-regular review of the must-reads for parents, kiddos, and picture book writers.
ISSUE 4: Channeling My Inner Z
Life has been a lot lately. I’m getting laid off at the end of this month and had to devote a lot of energy to finding a new job. I had back surgery a few weeks ago. Our condo is (still) on the market. And just over two months ago, Z turned two. I had intended to send out this issue of Reading with Z right after her birthday, recapping the many books she received. Clearly, I fell behind.
At least six times a day, Z randomly yells, “I did it!” Usually, it’s in reference to using the potty, washing her hands, or stacking a dozen or so Legos. The excitement is contagious. I don’t always know what she thinks she’s accomplishing, but she definitely is proud of herself for accomplishing it.
I can’t seem to do any of the big things right now. Mentally and physically, I am exhausted. But today, I want to be half as proud of myself as Z is of herself every day. So here’s a very belated birthday newsletter. I did it!
Birthday Book Highlight: The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish

As the writer of the family, it’s my prerogative to go overboard in purchasing books for Z’s birthday. Of the many stories she received from myself and others, one stands out: The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish by Lil Miss Hot Mess, illustrated by Olga de Dios.
Z loves singing “The Wheels on the Bus.” It’s probably her favorite song, second only to “Mo Bamba.” The revised lyrics and glitzy illustrations make grown readers chuckle, and Z absolutely loves it. Lately, she’s been insisting on reading this charming parody at least twice a day. Nothing beats her randomly patting her cheeks as she sings, “The cheeks on the drag queen go blush, blush, blush.”
Runner-Up: 100 Mighty Dragons All Named Broccoli

Z has also been insisting on reading 100 Mighty Dragons All Named Broccoli on a near-daily basis. Written by David LaRochelle and illustrated by Lian Cho, this delightfully silly story introduces some math concepts in a really natural way that is fun to read out loud. The illustrations are super cute, and I notice new things in the quirky ending every time we read it. It’s also fairly short, so it’s ideal for a book you’ll be forced to read on repeat.
Library Highlight: I Am Not an Octopus

Z started swim lessons a few months ago and oh boy does she hate them. I’d like to think this sweet tale has helped a bit. I Am Not an Octopus, written by Eoin McLaughlin and illustrated by Marc Boutavant, follows Terry, who is definitely not an octopus and definitely not at all afraid of swimming. I love how McLaughlin uses a conversational tone, with Terry speaking directly to the reader. I love the lesson, and the fact that the reader is pulled into helping Terry. I love the vibrant colors in every spread. It’ll be a little sad to return this one.
